He tried to fast for 40 days and 40 nights in imitation of Lord Jesus, but has died a month into his attempt. One of his family members said: “He was a very spiritual man. It’s unfortunate he had to die this way.”

“After a month we got the sad news of his death,” the relative said. Another relative said that he was a healthy and had no record of illness: “He was a healthy and religious old man who did not even look his age.”

It is believed that Manyuka survived only 30 days of his 40 days venture. However, the local police says, that this is not the first case when a person died from fasting, there are “numerous” other such cases reported.

“We have received such reports before, but we cannot stop the public from fasting,” a police spokesperson said.

On the other hand, Nehanda Radio’s reported that the circumstances surrounding Manyuka’s death are unexplained because he was alone in the wilderness when he died. A stranger found his dead body and notified the police.
