PESHAWAR: Unidentified gunmen kill a policeman as he was deployed at Church security.
Constable Ataullah was shot dead outside a Church in Umidabad within the confines of Pishtakhara police station in Peshawar. He was on duty outside the Assembly of God Church in Swati Gate when unknown gunmen stormed on a motorcycle opened fire at him and managed to escape.
“He was part of the security detail provided to the church by the police and was standing outside the church’s premises while his other colleague was inside at the time of the attack,” a local police official said.
Constable Attaullah was shot in the skull from behind, after which the assailants fled from the scene stealing Ataullah’s AK-47 rifle. As son as the incident was reported police authorities hurried to the spot and an extensive search operation was launched in the area, nonetheless the assailants had by now fled the vicinity. The Police officials say, Ataullah was a resident of Landi Arbab village and a father of two. His last rites were offered at Malik Saad Shaheed Lines and his dead body was later transported to his familial village for burial.
Earlier in July this year, another police constable Shahzad Gul was also shot dead in the same manner outside the same Church. The attack was accomplished in comparable fashion while the culprits also succeeded in stealing Constable Shahzad Gul’s rifle after assassinating him.
In the meantime, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Home Secretary, Syed Akhtar Ali Shah took notice of the incident and has ordered a comprehensive investigation. A Home and Tribal Affairs department handout issued earlier this week stated: “Shah ordered investigation police officers to form a special team and track down those responsible.”
Syed Akhtar also issued orders to all the divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, regional police officers and district police officers in KPK to make the security at all places of worship certain with heightened police patrolling.
