Alan Henning, a 47-year-old taxi driver from Eccles in Salford, was on his way to Syria in an aid convoy in December last year, according to him it was important to make sure aid was going to “the right people”. Volunteer Mr Henning was on his fourth aid mission to Syria when he was captured by Islamic State terror group, within minutes of arriving in the country in December 2013. A recent video has now been released by IS, apparently showing Mr Henning being killed. His kidnapping was not made public until nine months later when he became the fourth Western hostage – after US journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff and British aid worker David Haines – to be paraded in a video by the extremist organisation.
