Another archaeological treasure from the ancient city of Biblical times, in Iraq’ Nineveh plains is annihilated by the terror group ISIS.
Terror group ISIS has destroyed the ancient Mashqi Gate in the biblical city of Nineveh, media reports have confirmed. Nineveh was the capital city of the ancient Assyrian Empire.
The Mashqi Gate, which has been destroyed by the terror group, was unearthed in the 1960s. This ancient site dated back to the 7th century B.C. during the rule of King Sennacherib, who is also mentioned in the Bible. Biblical records sow that King Sennacherib invaded Judah during the rule of the Jewish King Hezekiah and laid siege to the city of Jerusalem. This event is mentioned three times all at different places in the Scripture.
Moreover, Nineveh is also mentioned in the book of Prophet Jonah. Prophet Jonah half-heartedly, but effectively, preached a message of repentance to the people of Nineveh. In line with a judgement against the city, as prophesied “Nineveh is laid waste!” the city was destroyed in 612 B.C. After a period of six centuries, Lord Jesus Christ made mention of Nineveh when He said that those of His generation who had rejected Him would be judged by the men of Nineveh who had repented at the warning of Jonah.
Ever since the terror group ISIS started its campaign of destruction, numerous archaeological sites have been destroyed or damaged by the militant group. The militants used bulldozers and explosives. The ancient historic artifacts had been sold in the black market by the militant group. In Syria, the group made vast destruction in the ancient city of Palmyra.
Back in July 2014, the terror group blew up the tomb of the Old Testament’ Prophet Jonah at the Nineveh site. Regardless of the fact, that a mosque was constructed over the shrine since the Muslim conquest of the area, ISIS continued to destroy it till utter ruin.
