At least 16 people have been killed as powerful explosion rocks Lahore. Those killed include DIG Traffic Ahmed Mobeen while more than 50 others were injured in the explosion near the provincial assembly in Lahore today, February 13. A spokesperson for a faction of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan TTP had claimed responsibility for the attack.

Bomb blast in Lahore

The blast unfolded when hundreds had gathered to protest against a new law. At least 400 protesters attended this protest, when the suicide blast unfolded. A Punjab Police spokesperson Nayab Haider said, “Apparently it was a suicide blast but police are still investigating to know the exact nature of blast.” Those who were killed included, DSP Pervez Butt and SSP East Zahid Nawaz Gondal.

Punjab Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique said more than 60 people suffered injuries. The condition of some 11 injured is stated to be critical, the minister said. An officer of Lahore police stated that the terrorist had apparently targeted the police personnel present at the scene.

“The target was not the protest demonstration but the police officers,” the officer said. The blast occurred minutes after DIG Mobeen had arrived at the scene in order to negotiate with the protesting chemists and pharmaceutical manufacturers who had participated in the protest.

Soon after the incident, Prime Minister heaped condemnation upon the heinous trike stating: “We will continue fighting this fight against the terrorists among us , and will continue to fight it until we liberate our people of this cancer, and avenge those who have laid down their lives for us. We will not stop until we can call ourselves a free and secure people; that is a promise.”
