In Jordan, the site that is believed to be the place where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist had been designated as the world heritage site by UNESCO.

The places mentioned in the Bible have become modern day pilgrimage places. “Bethany Beyond Jordan” or the eastern side of Jordan consists of Elijahs hill, the area of churches of St. John the Baptist and chapels, monastery and other baptism pools.

Millions of Christians around the globe are interested in getting baptized in River Jordan and currently 100,000 pilgrims visit these places every year.

According to UNESCO, the figures could increase dramatically after being recognized as world heritage.
