MP Jim Shannon’ letter reads as follows:

Mr. Mian Nawaz Sharif

Honourable Prime Minister

Christian community under threat of attack: Urgent action needed

I am writing to voice my deep concern regarding the life threats to the entire Christian community of Chak 44, Mandi Bahauddin, Punjab Province. The whole community is at risk of being attacked by a charged mob, which is threatening to set houses belonging to Christians on fire.

The police have done little to protect the community, and has left them at the mercy of a vengeful mass that has been incited by local clerics who have leveled unsubstantial allegations of blasphemy. The detail of the case is that Imran Masih, resident of Village Chak 44, Tehsil Phaliyan, District Mandi Bahauddin, Punjab, is a young Christian. He was accused of watching lectures of Pastor Sami Samson on his mobile, although he is illiterate and does not know how to down load anything on his mobile. Imran was beaten and locked up. Fortunately the local Christians got him released. He was terrified and ran away to save his life.

On April 29, 2016, during the Friday prayer, the local clerics made announcements on loudspeaker about Fatwa against Imran Masih. There is real danger that on Friday 13th May, after the Friday prayers the remaining Christians might be attacked and harmed.

I therefore urge upon you to take serious note of the situation of the Christians community of Chak 44, in Tehsil Phaliyan, Mandi Bahuddin and order police protection as soon as possible.

Yours Sincerely,
Jim Shannon MP
Chairman APPG for the Pakistani Minorities.
