Crosses torn down from 400 churches in eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang
According to details, Chinese authorities have torn down crosses from 400 churches. Chinese Christians fear Christianity has been targeted because the government is trying to curb its growth. While according to estimates number of Christians in China range from official figure of 23 million to as many as 100 million. The latter figure has been provided by independent Christian scholars.
However, recently authorities in Wenzhou (known as China’s Jerusalem) banned all Christmas celebrations or related activities in the city’s kindergartens and grade schools. Moreover, township officials tore down the cross of a church in western city that was about an hour ago hoisted on top of the church. Church congregation had just welded some pieces of metal into the cross and hoisted it onto the top of their church, that cross was forcibly removed in October.
“They keep a very close watch on us, and there is nothing we can do,” said a church official. “The situation is not good, as any attempt to re-erect the cross will be stopped,” he added.
