Pakistani Christians must unite in pursuit of their constitutional rights stated, Dr. Nazir S Bhatti, President of Pakistan Christian Congress (PCC). In a statement issued by the Central Secretariat of (PCC), Dr. Bhatti stated that ‘Joint Electorate’ was a conspiracy against 20 million Christians in Pakistan.
He maintained that by means of Joint Electorate, the mainstream political parties select individuals from Christian, Hindu and Sikh communities for the reserved seats for minorities in National and Provincial Assemblies. Before 2000, minorities were enjoying the right to elect their representatives out of their own free will.
It was maintained that religious political parties like Jamaat Islami (JI) and Jamiat Ulma-e-Islam (JUI) are attractive platforms for “opportunist’s minorities’ members when these religious parties have no program for socio-political uplift on minorities.”
“Pakistan People’s Party PPP, Pakistan Muslim League PML (N) and (Q), MQM, PTI, JI, JUI (F) and other Muslim political parties under 18th Amendment in constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan approved Separate Electorate, devolution of Federal Minorities Ministry and declaring religious minorities to be Non-Muslims to damage their identity and to hijack their vote bank,” PCC statement said.
PCC Chief maintained that by means of Joint Electorate, religious minorities have been robbed of their right to choose their representatives. Dr. Nazir Bhatti stated: “Due to Joint Electorate conspiracy there is no voice of minorities on floor of house which is very dangerous for integrity and solidarity of state.”
While urging Christians to stay united in pursuit of their legitimate rights, he said: “Pakistan Christian Congress PCC will keep demanding Dual Voting system that Christian, Hindus may elect their representatives with their votes.” He added, “PCC will soon announce nationwide protest to achieve voting right for Christians and other religious minorities.”
