Churches in Bethlehem to ring bells as a call for “peace”

The bells of all the churches in Bethlehem to chime tomorrow December 5, as a call for peace.

According to details, the bells in all the churches of Bethlehem will ring at 7:30 pm, on December 5, Saturday. This will be done as a call to create peace, while at the same time; the churches in Bethlehem have called upon churches all over the world to do the same.

The official communications office of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, made this announcement. Moreover, the city of the authorities of Bethlehem- the town where Lord Jesus Christ was born have made this decision in consideration of the heightened atmosphere of tension in the Holy Land at the moment.

Seeing that, the Church has entered the Advent season, which is a traditional time of waiting for the birth of Lord Jesus Christ. As is customary, the world focuses its attention on Bethlehem; which is the city of the Incarnation, which sees a full swing of Christmas preparations this time of the year.

The Municipality of Bethlehem is determined to uphold the calendar of planned festive events however; some changes have been made to regular schedule. For that reason, the traditional meal which is observed every year after the Christmas tree in the Manger Square is lit; has been cancelled.

The city has been decorated to a lesser extent; additionally the concerts which were scheduled have been cancelled. In this regard, the Mayor of Bethlehem, Vera Baboun said, these decisions were made “out of respect for our martyrs (Palestinians of Bethlehem who died in recent weeks in clashes with Israeli forces), for their families, and for the situation itself.”

“Bethlehem is still the town of peace and as Christmas draws near we must pray with even more faith for the gift of peace,” said Vera Baboun.
