One dead and three Chrisitans reportedly injured in a Muslim mob attack on families of two Coptic Christian priests on Sunday, July 17. The victim Fam Khalaf, 27, was hacked to death as the violent mob attacked the Christian families in the town of Tahna al-Gabal.
Egyptian officials confirmed the details on Monday, July 18, terming it as a personal row. Egyptian media reported: “local media reports suggest the fighting resulted from an argument between Muslim and Christian children over priority to pass through the street.” One of the three injured is father of the two priests. Police claims four people have been detained in this case. The incident sent the Christian to tizzy, as they protested against the recent gush in anti-Christians violence.
Egypt has been designated a Country of Particular Concern by the USCIRF. “Christians are estimated at 10 to 15 percent of the overall population, with the vast majority belonging to the Coptic Orthodox Church and less than two percent belonging to various other Christian denominations, including Catholic, Protestant, Maronite, Armenian Apostolic, Orthodox (Greek and Syrian), and Anglican,” USCIRF stated in its report.
