Egypt’s President Abdel Fateh al-Sisi has sworn to bring the Muslim mobsters to justice who had burned Christians’ homes and stripped a 70-year-old Christian woman naked followed by allegations that her son was allegedly having an affair with a Muslim woman. “We are all Egyptians who are equal in rights and duties,” al-Sisi added. “It is not appropriate that what happened be repeated. Whoever commits an offense will be held accountable.”
The incident took place in Minya province, where a charged mob ransacked and torched seven houses of Christians on May 20, Friday. The mob was furious followed by accusations that a Christian man son of the woman who was humiliated publicly is having an affair with a Muslim woman. The respondent had fled on May 19 and was not on the scene when the incident took place.
The mobsters dragged 70-year-old elderly Christian woman outside her house and publicly striped her naked. The elderly Christians woman said, “They burned the house and went in and dragged me out, threw me in front of the house and ripped my clothes. I was just as my mother gave birth to me and was screaming and crying.”
The family of the Christian man who was accused of having an affair with a Muslim woman, had informed the police a day before about possible reprisal from the Muslims. A Church primate of Minya Anba Makarios, said that the police showed reluctance to take preventive action. He said that the police arrived after two hours of the arson. Despite the fact that hundreds of people participated in the arson, but only six people were hooked by the police.
On Monday, May 30, Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi vowed during a speech in Cairo that the perpetrators who had publicly humiliated the elderly Christian woman and stripped her naked, and torched houses of Christians in Minya will be brought to justice. “When I address my speech to this woman, I don’t say this Christian Egyptian because we are all one. I call on this woman not to be angered by what happened.”
