Archbishop Joesph Coutts of Karachi was giving a speech on his tour to Portugal when he said that the Government of Pakistan might be willing to abolish the horrific blasphemy law.

But the government is currently unable to do so because of the overriding fear of extremists and the reaction they might give if the blasphemy law wad to be abolished

The recently proposed article of establishing mens rea or intention to carry out an act of blasphemy was strongly welcomed by Bishop Coutts.

He said that the psychological testing of people will prevent the misuse of the blasphemy law.

“The point that has finally got across is that it’s not just about the abolition of the law but the way the law is framed. We need safeguards to prevent the misuse of this law, which is what has been happening all along,” he explained.
