More than a century old church has been inaugurated after renovation work was completed. The newly constructed building of 116-year-old church at Chak 424 JB Montgomery, Gojra was inaugurated on Tuesday, September 19.
The inauguration was done by Archbishop of Uppsala and Ms Antji Jackelen primate of the Church of Sweden. Church of Sweden’s Ms Antji Jackelen who has met with Christians from various cities of Pakistan, said that Pakistani Christians have shown her much love during her visit to Pakistan.
Ms Antji Jackelen also praised the spirit of Christian community of Chak 424 JB, saying that it was remarkable how the local Christians had a passion for renovation their church’s building. During the inauguration ceremony clergymen from other cities were also present.These included, bishops of Lahore, Sialkot, Peshawar and secretary of Churches of Pakistan.
On this occasion, Punjab’s Minister for Human Rights and Minority Affairs Khalil Tahir Sandhu, also graced the inauguration ceremony. Addressing the ceremony, Provincial Minister said that the renovation of church was incredible feat, as the cost of all the renovation work was raised up by local Christians; on the basis of self-help.
Khalil Tahir said that more than 200 million rupees had been spent on the expansion and renovation work of the historic church. He appreciated the spirit of local Christians saying that all the expenses were borne by the Christians of the village.
Furthermore, Khalil Tahir told those present that 5% job quota reserved for minorities will soon be implemented. He explained that at present, about 68 officers from minorities were serving on important posts on the provincial level. Khalil Tahir himself hails from the Christian community.
