Government respects SC’s judgement in Asia Bibi case Pakistani Premier tells EU Parliament President


Pakistani Premier assured President of European Parliament that Pakistani government respects Supreme Court’s judgment in Asia Bibi’s case. EU Parliament President Antonio Tajani, thanked PM Imran Khan for ensuring safety and security of Asia Bibi and her family.

Prime Minister of Pakistan backed Asia Bibi's acquittal

Mr. Antonio Tajani phoned Pakistani Premier to express gratitude over government’s efforts in safeguarding Asia Bibi in the midst of threats and turmoil. “As citizens of Pakistan, Aasia Bibi and her family are entitled to all rights as guaranteed by the Constitution of Pakistan,” PM Imran Khan Mr. Antonio Tajani.

A press release issued by Prime Minister’s office said that the EU Parliament’s President had phoned PM Imran Khan to thank him for ensuring the safety and security of Asia Bibi and her family. PM reiterated the resolve that there should be better dialogue and cooperation in order to promote interfaith and intercultural harmony.

Mr. Tajani assured Pakistani Premier that the European Parliament will fully cooperate with Pakistani government in Asia Bibi’s matter. He said that a debate on Asia Bibi’s matter was scheduled to be held in the European Union Parliament; but was postponed.

Taking it to Twitter, the EU Parliament’s President said that Pakistani Prime Minister had “assured him that Asia Bibi and her family are safe and well”. He wrote, “We fully agreed on the need to respect all religions, everywhere in the world.”

On October 31, in a landmark decision the Supreme Court of Pakistan has acquitted Christian Woman Asia Bibi of blasphemy charge thus cancelling her death sentence. The decision met with heightened anger and annoyance by religious groups, who staged protests in several cities of Pakistan. Addressing the nation same day, Pakistani Premier said that: “The decision of the judges is according to the constitution and Pakistan’s constitution is according to the teachings of Islam.”

“Keeping in mind the evidence produced by the prosecution against the alleged blasphemy committed by the appellant, the prosecution has categorically failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt”, Supreme Court of Pakistan said in its verdict.

“….this appeal is allowed. The judgments of the High Court as well as the Trial Court are reversed. Consequently, the conviction as also the sentence of death awarded to the appellant is set aside and she is acquitted of the charge. She be released from jail forthwith, if not required in any other criminal case,” historic verdict said.

Asia Bibi a Pakistani Christian woman was on death row in blasphemy case. She was falsely accused of committing blasphemy in 2009, and was handed death sentence in 2010. Since being accused she was put behind the bars and was released just recently on November 7. Asia Bibi was set free from New Jail for Women in Multan amidst tight security and was shifted to a secure place.
