The newly elected Christian member of Sindh Assembly Anthony Naveed has reiterated his aim to uphold and promote rights of non-Muslims. Pakistan Peoples Party’s Anthony Naveed also occupies the position of information secretary of PPP’s minority wing.
Talking to media he said, “I thank the party leadership for sending me to Parliament, where I’ll try my best to promote the rights of various non-Muslim communities living across the province.” MPA Anthony further said that “The PPP is the only political party that is taking concrete steps to protect the rights of all minorities, including the Christian community, and empowering them socially, politically and economically.”
Detailing his aims as an MPA, he said that he will make all out efforts for implementation of the five percent quota for religious minorities in government jobs. He said that providing jobs to religious minorities can help uplift the marginalized minorities’ members. Moreover he highlighted the issue of Christian family laws, and said that “Because of British-era Christian family laws, the community has been suffering a lot. I’ll legislate about it.”
MPA Naveed also talked about the issues of lack of space in Christians’ graveyards and residential schemes for Christians. He said that he will do his utmost to resolve the issue of admission problems minorities’ students face.
Karachi is home to Pakistan’s second largest Christian community. Unofficial figures reveal that there are between 500,000 to 700,000 Christians in the metropolitan city. There are several Christian neighborhoods in the city including Essa Nagri, Michael Town, Christian Town, Father’s Colony, Saddar, Manzoor Colony, Akhtar Colony, , Khuda Ki Basti , Azam Basti, Grax Colony, Mariam Colony, Pahar Ganj, Ittehad Town; where a large number of Christians are nestled.
Anthony Naveed’s success was also celebrated among his community. For this reason a prayer service was organized for him. Speaking about their leader, a local Christian said, “We thank the PPP leadership, especially Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, for making Naveed an MPA.” He went on to say that Anthony Naveed “lives with us and understands our issues. He has been resolving our issues since the past several years, and hopefully he will now do so from the floor of the Sindh Assembly.”
