Imam Gets 5 Year Jail Sentence For Hate Speech

The Anti Terrorism Court in Tuesday sentenced a prayer leader (imam) from kasur to five years of jail for delivering hate speech in a public gathering.

Maulana Abubakar a prayer leader was arrested in February in Kasur district, Punjab, for making a speech against the minority Shiite sect.

A case was filed under section 9 of the Anti Terrorism Court against Qari Abubakar at Kot Radha Kishan police station. The prayer leader was inciting people against a religious sect labeling them as infidels and was arrested on the spot.

In the latest bloodshed, 44 Shiites were massacred in the southern city Karachi last week, in the first attack claimed by the Islamic State jihadist group in the country.

According to law specialists, an appeal can be lodged against the verdict within 5 days in the Lahore High Court.
