Iraq Crisis: Dropping Aid From Planes Is Least Favoured Option

Packages including food, water purification cans and solar lanterns have been dropped to thousands fleeing the Islamic State (IS) forces advancing towards further areas of northern Iraq.

The relief goods when packed into crates and parachuted in dropped from planes are termed as “least favoured option” for delivering aid by an air drops specialist.

Andrew MacLeod, coordinator of air drops for Red Cross says, “Wastage is huge, Airdrops have the highest visibility on TV and the lowest impact on the ground. They are the least favoured option, used only in absolutely extreme circumstances where it is the only option.”
