Ever since, the invasion of Islamic State militants in Mosul, churches, Assyrian palaces and Shi’a mosques, have been stormed in by the radicals including the tomb of Jonah that was destroyed by the jihadists. According to latest reports, IS is just 30 kilometres away from Old Testament Prophet Ezekiel’s tomb, the most revered of Jewish shrines in Iraq.
In the face of this threat to ancient religious sites, a group of determined young Assyrian Christians has stayed behind at al-Kosh in northern Iraq to defend the tomb of the Biblical prophet Nahum. According to latest reports, IS is just 30 kilometres away from Old Testament Prophet Ezekiel’s tomb, the most revered of Jewish shrines in Iraq.
