Followed by devastating earthquake, Pope Francis on Wednesday, August 24 skipped his homily during his general audience, in its place led the pilgrims in praying the rosary for the victims and affectees of Italy’s catastrophic earthquake.
The Pontiff while holding the rosary, said that he was appalled by the immense devastation caused by the quake that struck central Italy. He voiced a heartfelt pain at the loss of valuable lives at the same time expressed solidarity with the victims. At this occasion, the congregants assembled at the St. Peter’s Square recited the rosary along.
A massive quake of magnitude 6.2 hit central Italy on Wednesday August 24. At least 250 people have been reportedly perished after Wednesday’s quake. Since then hundreds of aftershocks have jolted the areas of central Italy, which has hindered the rescue and search efforts.
The worst affected areas are the towns of Amatrice, Arquata, Accumoli and Pescara del Tronto. At the moment more than 300 people are receiving treatment in hospitals while dozens are believed to be still confined under the rubble. Meanwhile nearly 5,000 rescue workers are sweeping through debris and rubble hunting for survivors as they use heavy machinery and other equipment or bare hands at times.
