Two Christian schoolteachers lost their lives to a terrorist attack in Kenya’s Mandera East. The attack unfolded in the early hours of October 10, Wednesday when militants ambushed a school.
Christian persecution watchdog International Christian Concern (ICC) confirmed that 2 Christians were murdered while three others were severely injured as a result of this attack. The militants attacked the Arabia Boys School, as they started bombing houses of teachers. The deceased were identified as Johnstone Okumu and Simon Wekesa.
“It is painful to lose our colleagues through such a heinous act of cowardice. Our hearts bleed because even after dedicating our time and professionalism in serving this community, they still hate Christians,” Martin Kamutu a local teacher was quoted by Christian Post. Teachers are of the view that radicals are specifically targeting Christian non-locals often because of their faith as they live and serve in Northeastern Kenya.
A local police official Mandera told International Christian Concern that: “We have lost two teachers to a terrorist attack early this morning at Arabia Boys School. We are already pursuing the attackers in collaboration with our forces in Somalia in case they have crossed the border”.
Reverend John a local church leader said that Christians are being attacked because of their faith. “This is another bad example of what religion can do. We are losing Christians at a very high rate in Mandera. Last month we lost five to terrorism and now again we have lost two teachers. We ask the international community and human rights groups to get involved in northern Kenya,” he said. Authorities are yet to determine if the assailants belonged to terrorist group Al-Shabaab. Somali based Al-Shabaab has been frequently and actively targeting Christians since years.
