The Kotwali police lodged an FIR, on Monday, under Section 295/A of the Pakistan Penal Code (blasphemy law) against 8 nominated and 60 unknown members of the District Bar Association (DBA).
The police had filed a criminal case a couple of days ago, on the orders of the Kotwali district police officer, against Kotwali Station House Officer Umar Daraz, ASI Mubashir and five other policemen. They were accused of beating and keeping a lawyer, Aftab Nadeem, in illegal custody. The DBA members went on strike till the arrest of the SHO and his underlings when the police failed to arrest the nominated accused police officials.
On the third day of the lawyers’ protest Arshad Mahmood, Jhang Sardar, a resident of Basti Attawali, informed the police through an application that some lawyers had yelled slogans with the name of SHO Umar Daraz and mentioned the name of Umar during the protest which had distressed the applicant’s religious feelings.
As a result, the Kotwali police registered an FIR (No 294/14) against 8 nominated and 60 unidentified lawyers under Section 295/A of the PPC.
It was a unique FIR in which the lawyers, who were opposing the police haughtiness, were booked under blasphemy law, Sources said. The matter would be taken up by Punjab and Pakistan Bar Councils.
Some DBA members supposed SHO, Rana Umer Daraz, was a family member of a prominent Punjab minister and belonged to Faisalabad. They suspected the police filed the case against the lawyers as a counter to the FIR against the SHO.
District Police Officer, Zeeshan Asghar, was not there for a comment on the topic.
