Lebanon: A Christian might become President amid ongoing political crisis



A Christians might occupy the office of the President of Lebanon.

In keeping with details, a Christian namely Suleiman Franjieh, is expected to become the President of Lebanon amid ongoing political crisis. Suleiman Franjieh is a childhood friend of the Syrian President Bashar-al-Assad.In a power-sharing deal, which is intended to revitalize the paralyzed state, Suleiman Franjieh is expected to instil renewal in the political arena of Lebanon. However, Saad-al-Hariri is expected to become the Prime Minister.

In recent times, Lebanon has been surviving without a President. Since 18 months now a unity government which was led by Prime Minister Tammam Salam is only just functioning in order to keep the country going. So far, the proposal put forth by Hariri is believed to be the most sombre effort yet to settle the political impasse in Lebanon.

A top advisor to Iran’s Supreme leader, Akbar Velayati, who recently visited Beirut on Monday, November 30, explained after meeting Tammam Salam that there are increased expectations for the election of a president soon. “We hope to witness in the immediate future the selection and election of a president of the republic,” he stated.

However, the possibility of Suleiman Franjieh, being appointed as President of Lebanon is likely to face great opposition from the politicians who had already been campaigning against the Syrian influence in Lebanon. These politicians had been able to bring round while coveting the post reserved for a Maronite Christian, notably Michel Aoun and Samir Geagea.

According to the views expressed by the analysts it in case the appointment of Suleiman Franjieh, fails the chances to stabilize the country amid in progress crisis of government will become even bleak. Lebanon has been grappling with a crisis since recent past, which had rendered it derailed, while the trash piles up in the streets and the Lebanese army goes without salaries.
