LAHORE: A Pakistani Christian woman Asia Bibi who was condemned to death four years ago over blasphemy charges is now losing hope that she will be freed or pardoned.
Ashiq Masih, husband of Asia Bibi said, “Asia was hopeful that her appeal would be admitted and she would be freed, but now she has lost hope.” Ashiq Masih and his family is forced into hiding by his wife’s conviction.
Asia Bibi has been on death row since November 2010 after she was found guilty of committing blasphemy and charged under 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code. However, her defence counsels had lodged an appeal against her death sentence in the Lahore High Court but LHC confirmed the death sentence two weeks ago, wrecking hopes that death sentence might be altered to a jail term.
Asia’s husband while speaking after visiting her for the first time since the Lahore court’s ruling said it had come as a crushing blow. “She was distraught, weeping for most of the time I had with her, appealing to the Supreme Court and president to use their powers to give her justice.”
