Pakistani Christian Nominated for Senate in Sindh Assembly

After four years a Christian man, Anwar Lal Dean is selected by PPP leaders. He is among one of the candidates of PPP who will fight in election next month for the upper house of Parliament. Mr Dean almost lost his seat as MPA in 2013 but remained with the party.

Anwar Lal Dean worked as the president of minority in Karachi for about 15 years. He is happy and grateful to the PPP leadership particularly Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Asif Ali Zardari and Faryal Talpur for putting forward his name for Senate.

Anwar Lal Dean began his political career in his student life. At that time he was with the Catholic priest identified as Father Derek Misquita who was an MPA during Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s regime. Mr Dean said that the PPP continued its old strategy of giving Senate tickets to its party workers.

Presently, Anar Lal Dean lives in Saddar, Karachi in a small flat with his wife and seven children. According to Dean PPP is the only political party which takes care of all minorities’ rights in Pakistan, particularly Christianity. PPP promotes Christian community socially, economically and politically. It also gives equal rights to minorities like other citizens. Whenever the PPP is in power it also empowers the minority.

Dean further says that PPP often ignored Christians living in Sindh specially those Punjabi speaking Christians and preferred Hindu leaders for MPA and MNA seats since they have strong vote bank of Hindu community in Tharparkar, Umerkot and Jamshoro.

Only one seat was allotted to a Christian candidate out of 9 seats reserved for minorities. In 2013, Arif Masih Bhatti was elected by Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) but later Mr. Bhatti joined PPP in 2017. Presently, there are two seats reserved for Christian minority while 7 out of 9 seats are given to Sindhi speaking Hindu leaders.

MQM has more vote bank of Christians than PPP. MQM-P has selected many Christian leaders as councilors at city, district and union level to strengthen its party. The PPP after realizing the importance of Christians vote bank are now selecting Christian leaders.

Anthony Naveed, a Christian leader and former vice chairperson of Akhtar Colony Union Council, is nominated as the provincial secretary information. He also submitted papers for Senate reserved seat of minority.
As some activists consider the selection of Dean as a support for the party while some people think that these minority leader only remain faithful to their party not with the community which elect them through their votes.
A person who does not want to reveal his name told that a Christian leader of MQM Yaqoob Ilyas who was the provincial minister for information and technology did not reply a single email.

Christian community activists are thankful to the PPP and want an active Christian leader with legislation experience in the upper House of Senate who can comprehend the minority issues in the country.
