Pakistani Christian school teacher Mrs. Ishrat Saba faces threats after she raised her voice against sexual harassment perpetrated by her school’s headmaster Zaheer Abbas. Mrs. Ishrat Saba works as a teacher at the Government Elementary Middle School, in Chak number 43, Kacha Pakka, Phool Nagar, District Kasur. The incident surfaced after Christian rights activist Saleem Iqbal highlighted her plight.
The victim in a recorded statement maintained that she has been working at the same school since one and a half year. It has been four months that her headmaster started sexually harassing her. She said that the headmaster also tried to engage her in religious debates.
Mrs. Ishrat Saba revealed that the headmaster called her in office one day to show saying that he wanted to show her an assignment. “He started showing me vulgar content,” she maintained adding that irked by his intentions she hit him with a register. The matter was later brought before the higher authorities. Consequently, the headmaster confessed to sexually harassing Ishrat Saba and offered apology to the victim.
After this incident the headmaster started mocking her on regular basis. Vexed with the headmaster she penned a compliant to the Chief Executive Education Officer Kasur. The Executive Education Officer advised Zaheer Abbas to apologize to the victim. However, no inquiry was conducted even after reporting the incident. On November 7, Javed Nasir brother of Zaheer Abbas arrived at the school. Javed was allegedly drunk and started threatening Mrs. Ishrat Saba. Javed and his accomplices said that they wanted to abduct and kill her calling her choohri.
Punjab’s Minister for Human Rights and Minorities’ Affairs Ejaz Alam Augustine took notice of the incident and directed the concerned police officers to register an FIR. On November 9, an FIR number 364/18 invoking sections B/506 and 186, was registered at Serai Mughal Police Station. Javed Nasir and four unknown persons were nominated in the FIR.
