In line with the details, On 21st of July 2013, a disabled Christian man, Shafaqat Emmanuel, and his wife, Shagufta Kausar, were booked by the police in Gojra District for allegedly sending blasphemous text messages to local Muslims.
Police registered an FIR bearing number 407/13 under sections 295-B and 295-C of Pakistan Penal Code upon the complains of Muhmmad Hussain and Anwar Mansoor Goraya, Tehsil Bar Association president. The complainants allegedly accused that they received the blasphemous text messages from the number registered on Shagufta Kausar’s name.

The SHO of Gojra City Police Station, Muhammad Nasir, says,The police had verified that the SIM used to send the blasphemous text messages was registered in Shagufta’s name whereas her husband admitted to use her phone to send the messages to Hussain.”

Conversely, Shagufta told the police that they had lost the cell phone a month earlier. She initially denied the charges but police used third degree torture on Shafaqat Masih, who is crippled and physically disabled. With an intention of forcing them to confess, the police tortured him before the eyes of his wife and four children. Eventually, Police forced him to own up the charges or else incriminate others. Otherwise, threatening him to torture his wife Shagufta Kausar.
Severely injured and horrified Shafaqat admitted under pressure that he had sent the messages, whereas when lawyers from aiding organizations asked Shafaqat Emmanuel, he denied the charges saying,” There is no man who can stand to see his wife being tortured by police, so to save my wife, I confessed.”
In addition he told the legal teams that, “When we lost the phone and the SIM, I visited the nearby mobile shop many times to block our mobile SIM.”
According to some sources, police confirmed Shafaqat’s statement with the mobile shop. The shop owner confirmed that,” he came twice to block his SIM card.” Despite the inconsistent evidences against the couple and obvious proof that the couple had lost their cell phone and SIM card, still an FIR was registered against them notwithstanding the pressurizing from local clerics.
The extremist groups are demanding death penalty for the allegedly accused overlooking the lack of any sizeable evidence against the detained Christian couple.
