In a gesture of interfaith harmony, social activists from various religions joined forces with Pakistan Red Crescent Society in order to provide emergency first aid to the Muharram mourners. In keeping with details, an emergency response team was formed by the Pakistan Red Crescent Society which was to administer emergency medical aid to the mourners.
This special emergency response team offered services to the Muharram mourners on 9th and 10th Muharram. Pakistan Red Crescent’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa team members were positioned at three main points in Peshawar.
Split into smaller units, the PRCS first team was deployed at Kachi Mohallah, Lahori Gate. Second team was stationed at the Qissa Khwani Bazar while third team was posted at Tabela Imam Bargah and Kohati Gate areas of the KP Capital.
The central procession commenced from Imam Bargah Hussainian in Saddar and conclude at the same place after passing traditional routes. In order to provide fool proof security to the mourners, the KP police and law enforcement agencies made guaranteed fail-safe security arrangements for peaceful observance of processions on 9th and 10th Muharram. In Peshawar, about 9,000 police personnel were deployed for security of Muharram processions.
Muharram marks the holy day of Ashura. Grandson of Prophet Muhammad, Imam Hussain Ali was killed on this day during the battle of Karbala. Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and mourning processions, majalis, fasting and feeding the poor mark the 10th day of Muharram.
