Metropolitan Police said that the counter-terrorism squads were investigating. London police confirmed that “a number” of people were injured in the incident.
London’s Metropolitan police stated that the injured appeared to have burns as the explosion is described as a fire. Media quotes eyewitnesses describe chemical smell on the train immediately after the blast. One of the eye witnesses was quoted by the media saying: “There was a woman on the platform who said she had seen a bag, a flash and a bang, so obviously something had gone off.”
“I saw crying women, there was lots of shouting and screaming, there was a bit of a crush on the stairs going down to the streets,” he said. He described the situation saying that he saw several people injured, who appeared to be trampled as crowds panicked and fled as a result of the explosion.
“I was on second carriage from the back. I just heard a kind of whoosh. I looked up and saw the whole carriage engulfed in flames making its way towards me,” another eye witness who was on the train said. “A lot of people were trampled on. There were phones, hats, bags all over the place and when I looked back I saw a bag with flames. People were crying, shocked, a few people had been injured, some people had been trampled,” she said.
Theresa May in a statement regarding the attack stated: “My thoughts are with those injured at Parsons Green and emergency services who are responding bravely to this terrorist incident.” British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has asked people not to panic stating that people should “keep calm and go about their normal lives.”
