COLOMBO: A Sri Lankan court orders authorities to stop deporting Pakistanis seeking asylum.
A Sri Lankan court today ordered the Sri Lankan authorities to stop deporting Pakistani asylum seekers after a complaint filed against unlawful deportations. These Pakistanis were forcibly sent home without having their asylum claims properly assessed by the authorities.
The United Nations refugee agency says 88 Pakistanis have been deported since August 1. The petitioner Anila Imran has mentioned the controller of the immigration and emigration, the minister of external affairs, the defence minister, defence secretary, the inspector general of police, the human rights commissioner and the attorney general as respondents in her petition.
