At the same time as the U.S. military strikes the Islamic State group in Iraq, Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces have extensively intensified their own campaign against the IS’s strongholds in Syria. This intensified campaign includes dozens of air strikes against the IS group’s headquarters in the past two days.

According to details, on Monday, Islamic State fighters were closing in on the last government-held army base the Tabqa air base in the north-eastern Raqqa province, prompting at least 16 Syrian government air strikes in the area in an attempt to halt IS militants advance.
