PESHAWAR: Edwards College confrontation continues as the students and employees turn out in protest.
Subsequent to the suspension of four more teachers of the Edwardes College Peshawar, the workers and students have resorted to protest demanding an urgent termination of Titus Pressler as principal. The agitated protestors have made their intentions clear asserting that they will continue their protest till the principal is removed.
On the other hand, the management of the Edwards College, sensing the sensitivity of the worsening situation has closed the institution for an indefinite period. Nonetheless, the protestors including teaching and non-teaching employees and the students have solemnly vowed to go on with the protest drive despite the closure of college until their demands be met. Edwards College is an historic institution of Peshawar ranked among one of the most prestigious educational institutions of KPK has seen ups and down in its administrative affairs since past few years now. The situation at the Edwards College did worsen ever since the controversial appointment of Titus Pressler, a US national, as its principal.
While defending his cause, Titus Pressler said: What happened today is unfortunate. The issue of suspension and show-cause notices to the teachers is an internal matter of the institution and it is confidential and it should not be discussed in media. He went to allege that all the allegations published against him in newspapers were false.
Then again the protesting teachers said: that they won’t call off their protest till removal of the principal, who according to them was responsible for the academic inefficiency, administrative problems and financial irregularities in the institution. The staff and students staged a protest against the principal, blocking the main Sher Shah Suri Road for several hours. They also rallied and marched towards the Governor’s House chanting “Go Titus Go and No Titus No” as they submitted a demand, urging the Governor to without more ado remove Titus Pressler as principal.
In the intervening time, parents of students also expressed grave concerns over closing of the Edwards College and said: this would waste the precious time of kids. The annoyed parents however, urged Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Engineer Shaukatullah who also serves as chairman of the board of governors of the Edwards College, to investigate the issue while guaranteeing reopening of the college as soon as possible.
Some professors who took part in the protest alleged Bishop Humphrey Peter to have been deliberately resorting to delaying tactics. Bishop Humphrey Peters is a member of the committee that is headed by Mushtaq Ghani an advisor to chief minister of KP Pervez Khattak on higher education. The professors also alleged that Bishop Humphrey Peters is a defender of the principal.
