Federal Minister for Human Rights Kamran Michael called on the bereaving families of Mubarakabad Basti in Toba Tek Singh. On January 3, Tuesday a group of Christian leaders including pastors and political activists arrived at the mourning Christian neighborhood. While addressing the assembly of local Christians, Federal Minister assured the bereaved families that the nation stands in solidarity with them in this hour of distress.
During this visit, Federal Minister Kamran Michael was accompanied by Archbishop of Faisalabad Joseph Arshad, Pastor Shahzad Sadeeq, MPA Shakeel Marcus Khokhar, Joel Amir Sohotra, Imtiaz Chghtai, Saleem Rehmat Sindhu, D.C.O, D.P.O, Teams from ISAAC Tv and Praise Tv, Chaudhry Ashraf Gulshan, Faryad Bhatti, Emmanuel Julius Arthur, Ex-MPA Kamal Chughtai and many others.
While addressing the locals, Federal Minister announced that every member of the affected families will be offered government jobs, along with financial assistance. At the same time he praised and appreciated the efforts of D.C.O, in this connection. He said that the progress made in investigations thus far was satisfactory and more need to be done in order to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Previously on Christmas Eve, at least 150 people were seriously affected by consuming tainted liquor. This liquor which was later revealed to be aftershave lotion has thus far claimed at least 50 lives while dozens critically affected are still in the hospitals.
Death toll is expected to rise. Moreover, those affected complain of not being treated well at Toba Tek District Headquarters Hospital and Allied Hospital in Faisalabad. Some of the victims still receiving medical treatment complain of losing their eye sight.
As investigations into the Toba Tek Singh tragedy unfold new revelations, the city police have added section of the Anti Terrorism Act, 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code. At the same time, the already invoked Section 322 was substituted by 322(A) in the FIR registered against five. These changes have been made on the recommendations of the district prosecutor.
On December 28, DPO Toba Tek Singh, Usman Akram Gondal while addressing a press conference, said that the tragedy had unfolded because the victims had consumed aftershave lotion instead of liquor. He further briefed the media about the raids being carried out in this connection. He said that police is making all out efforts in order to hook the perpetrators, revealing further that the prime suspect in this case, namely Sawan Masih is among five suspects who have already been arrested. At this occasion, the detainees were presented before the media.
DPO Usman Akram Gondal said that the prime suspect Sawan Masih and Iqbal Rakka Masih, Sajjad Masih and Adeel Mani Masih took 20-liter chemical can to Mubarakabad on the Christmas day. He further revealed that the chemical basically; aftershave lotion which was later sold to the people after being mixed with other poisonous chemicals or water.
