UN declares a highest level of emergency in Iraq amid advancing IS jihadists causing tens of thousands to be displaced.
The UN has declared its highest level of emergency in Iraq as a humanitarian crisis tags along the rapid advance by Islamic State militants in the northern part. The UN estimates that 1.2 million Iraqis have been internally displaced by the crisis.
In the meantime the US says it is not likely there will be a rescue mission to help thousands who have fled to Mt Sinjar. Nevertheless the US vowed to continue to provide humanitarian aid there.
