US carries out air strikes to gain control of Iraq’s largest dam which was taken over by the IS militants earlier this month.
US air strikes were carried out to sustain the Iraqi forces’ efforts to retake the country’s largest dam. The dam was seized by IS militants on 7 August, which supplies water and electricity to northern Iraq.
If the US and Iraqi forces succeed in recapturing the dam it will be the biggest blow for IS since they launched their offensive in Iraq in June this year.
It was feared that IS, could have used it to flood areas downstream.
