locusts turning the skies dark

Plagues of locusts are spilling over large areas of southern Russia, as an ominous threat to thousands of acres of crops while in some places even darkening the skies.

According to reports aired by Stavropol’s regional agricultural ministry, these waves of locusts began around July 20, this year. The situation has become so critical tha the officials from the Russian ministry of agriculture have declared a state of emergency, but appear completely powerless to prevent the devastation.

The officials claim, they are increasing efforts to save the harvest by increasing crop-spraying flights. However, high summer temperatures are decreasing the effectiveness of the powerful pesticides they use.

What is more, officials also say that the locust swarms are moving swiftly across southern Russia; at times too fast for the authorities to carry on the counter measures. The locusts leave nothing but a trail of destruction behind them.

These phenomenal events must be seen as God’s way of speaking to us, His way of warning us. God has constantly used natural events to get our attention. He wants us to get saved.

Locusts are a judgement of God. In Old Testament, a plague of locusts against Egypt and the Pharoah is recorded in Exodus 10:13-15. The Scripture says:

“13 So Moses stretched out his staff over Egypt, and the Lord made an east wind blow across the land all that day and all that night. By morning the wind had brought the locusts;
14 they invaded all Egypt and settled down in every area of the country in great numbers. Never before had there been such a plague of locusts, nor will there ever be again.
15 They covered all the ground until it was black. They devoured all that was left after the hail—everything growing in the fields and the fruit on the trees. Nothing green remained on tree or plant in all the land of Egypt.”

This was the eighth plague the LORD sent on Egypt. This plague resurfaced as one of the covenant curses promised to Israel (Deut. 28:38-42). It is interesting to note that the last time we find mention of locusts in the New Testament is in regard to judgment on the Kingdom of Satan, in the book of Revelation.

“The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss.
2 When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace. The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss.
3 And out of the smoke locusts came down on the earth and were given power like that of scorpions of the earth.
4 They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.
5 They were not allowed to kill them but only to torture them for five months. And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion when it strikes.
6 During those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.” Revelation 9:1-6
